And now, for a nerd moment. I have recently discovered Rebel Force Radio, which I suggest you all start listening to immediately. I went back to the very beginning of the show, January 2013. Episode 7 had just been announced. The Clone Wars was on its last legs. It's really fun to listen to all the speculation and announcements from the perspective of 3 years out. Closest thing I'll ever get to time travel, except I can't respond to them ("No, Jimmy Mac, that's completely wrong!").
Anyway, the experience has answered some questions I didn't know I even had. For instance, I've always thought the title of Return of the Jedi referred to the Jedi order getting reestablished after the defeat of Palpatine. But that is not the case. The Jedi the title refers to is Anakin. It is literally the return of The Jedi, the Chosen One, who finally brought balance to the Force after all.
That balance thing is another question I didn't know I had. I thought he had brought balance by killing the Jedi, and I thought it pretty funny that the Jedi council figured defeating the Sith would bring balance. After all, if the Sith are gone, there are only Jedi left, and that is just as imbalanced as if the dark side is stronger.
But the Clone Wars emphasized what Ep3 only had time to hint at: the dark side was stronger than the light, so much so that the Jedi couldn't see (metaphysically speaking), which is why they were so readily manipulated by Palpatine to make a series of really poor decisions. There really was a dark side imbalance.
There is one other thing I've always been bothered by but to whch I finally have an answer I'm comfortable: I've always felt there was a major time disparity in Empire Strikes Back. Luke somehow gets strong enough in the Force to hold his own against Vader in what appears to be about two days, max.
I came to the understanding, some time ago, that he wasn't really very close to Vader's level after all. Vader didn't want Luke dead, he wanted an apprentice. Vader was just playing around during that fight.
That still didn't answer the time problem for me. Watching Ep7 gave me another piece of the puzzle. If Rey can become that strong with no (apparent) training in so short a time, Luke could too, presumably.
That still wasn't enough for me, though, but today I read a forum thread from some random site posted back on 2011 that pointed out that the Falcon didn't have a functioning hyperdrive to get to Bespin so they had to make that entire flight at sublight speed. Who knows how long that took? It could have been days, weeks, months, or years. Probably not the latter, but I can totally see, say, a three month journey that gave Luke time to get some control over his abilities.
